Physical & Occupational Therapy

Listening. Speaking. Learning Together.

DePaul School for Hearing and Speech provides physical and occupational therapy services on-site. Our licensed therapists have more than 15 years of experience working with deaf or hard of hearing students in a Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) environment.

The Therapists provide screenings, evaluations, and direct treatment in the following areas:

  • sensory processing
  • gross and fine motor performance
  • self-care activities
  • visual and perceptual skills
  • handwriting

Preschool children participate in group sensory motor activities that address specific developmental fine and gross motor skills. Students in our young elementary classrooms participate in the Adaptive Phys. Ed. Gym group conducted in a large gym once per week. They participate in fitness, games and sports activities planned by our Physical and Occupational Therapist. The sole aim is to prepare them for success with higher level advanced fitness/gross motor activities when mainstreamed. The therapists visit classrooms for consultations to enhance the development of specific skills and to make appropriate adaptations that improve classroom performance and foster independence.  At DePaul, we believe that physical and occupational therapy are part of a holistic approach that enables every child to fully benefit from their Individualized Educational Program (IEP).
